What is Vermouth?
Vermouth is a fortified wine available sweet or dry. It is well know for an "additive" in martinis as well as other cocktails but can also be served solo over ice. You may find vermouth called for in a recipe in which case you may want to use one of the suggested substitutes below.
Substitute For Vermouth
Substitute For Sweet Vermouth:
- Equal amounts of a medium-dry white wine (Sauvignon blanc)
Substitute For Dry Vermouth:
- Equal amounts of dry Sherry
- OR - Sake
- OR - Dry white wine
- OR - For a Martini use a small amount of dry sherry
No Alcohol Substitute:
- Use equal amounts of vegetable, fish, or chicken stock. This will work best in soups or sauces.
